sifting-wheat1So trouble comes in 3’s. Or does it?  That old adage doesn’t really    hold water, because a season of trial can come in 2’s, 3’s and 5’s…no particular  count.  My own season of misery actually contained 5 major events  (significant disclosure from my spouse and eventual divorce, 2 deaths of  family members, messy estate dealings and the loss of my job when the  company I worked for closed down), but who’s counting?

A very close friend of mine just spent 5 months in and out of the hospital with her husband who had 3 open heart surgeries in 3 months.  Throw in a death of a close family member and you have 4 major events.

Another person I know lost his job, had a child diagnosed with a fatal illness and a brother sentenced to prison.  That’s 3 but feels like more…

The point is, so many of us can relate to Jesus’ words to Peter:

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.  And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32

In those days sans combines, sifting included putting the wheat on the floor and beating it.  Got that.  You’ve been beaten and bruised and bloodied.  By the time most people have lived 40-50 years they get this.  But the beating isn’t all…the wheat was taken out and thrown into the air over and over so that the lighter parts were blown away with the wind and the heavier “quality stuff” fell below.  So it’s not enough to be merely beaten.  You’ve also been thrown into the air and allowed to hit the ground, maybe multiple times.

What I love in this message in Luke is that Jesus says he has prayed for Simon Peter.  He’s praying for you, too.  For many days, maybe months, you’ve just been working to survive.  But he’s there…praying…that your faith will not fail.

It’s no coincidence that you are reading this.  His prayer, and ours, is that your faith will not fail, but grow; that your life will not be beaten, but strengthened; that the good stuff will be left; that what will come of these life changing events will be a healthy life sustaining food for yourself and others.

Jesus has prayed for you and so have we.
